Insights from the 2nd Annual Leadership Summit
At the end of February in Norfolk, VA, Xylem Kendall held its 2nd Annual Leadership Summit, our largest and most significant leadership gathering to date. This milestone reflects the amazing growth we’ve achieved in 2024. With our team expanding to nearly 6,500 employees across the country, we’re on our way to becoming the second-largest utility vegetation management company in the world!
As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, we must also look forward. The key to our continued success lies in our commitment to Operational Excellence. At this year’s meeting, we introduced the POWER program, designed to help us reach operational excellence in every aspect of our work. The POWER program has two primary components: POWER Scores and POWER Initiatives.
POWER Scores will help our leaders understand their performance using a simple and comprehensive system, allowing them to see what we’re doing well and where we can improve. The POWER Initiatives are specific, actionable projects that will help us enhance operations across all departments and teams.
Stay tuned! In the coming weeks and months, we’ll share more about the POWER program, including a training program for all field leaders, from General Foreperson and up.

Keeping Our Assets Rolling: Inside the Fleet Management Team
Behind every smoothly operating vehicle in our fleet is a dedicated team ensuring that equipment stays on the road with minimal downtime. Fleet Management, led by Director of Fleet Nick Oney, is responsible for more 5,500 rolling assets across all Xylem Kendall regions.
What sets us apart from our competition? Nick credits our people, process, and technology. We use advanced technologies and reliable equipment, backed by a strong team and comprehensive maintenance programs, to ensure maximum uptime. One of our biggest differentiators is our fleet management software. With full visibility into service schedules, work order history, and asset utilization, we can make data-driven decisions that maximize asset usage and optimize fleet performance.
An even more important market advantage is our centralized Care Center. While other companies operate independently, our fleet management operation is standardized across the company, from ordering parts to maintaining equipment. This approach allows us to leverage economies of scale and improve efficiency.
The Care Center is managed by Julie Orton, Corporate Fleet Controller. Acting as a command hub, the Care Center tracks and coordinates maintenance work orders for all rolling assets using the Mobiworks platform. Reporting to Julie are five Fleet Assistant Controllers, each responsible for a specific geographic area. They are Anne White, Brandy Thompson-Christopher, Haley Adams, Katherine Wagner, and Shana Watts.
The Assistant Controllers and their teams collaborate with Regional Managers, Supervisors, and other internal resources to handle work orders efficiently. From oil changes to breakdowns to inspections, the teams ensure that vehicles remain in top condition. They also oversee the components and mechanics of chippers, jarraffs, bucket trucks, bush hogs, and other specialized equipment. Their work includes GPS and electronic system repairs too, ensuring all vehicle systems function properly. They also coordinate vendor services for on-site, after-hours oil changes and annual inspections, ensuring compliance with state and DOT regulations.
The Care Center includes three more divisions that keep our fleet operations running smoothly:
Transportation – Led by Ashley Cool, Transportation Controller, this team is responsible for moving and transferring major repairs to the shop using our own transport vehicles. They also support hauls as needed, moving equipment like jarraffs and bucket trucks.
Shop Division – Under the leadership of Miranda Tillett, Shop Controller, this division oversees all six Xylem Kendall shops across the county. Our skilled mechanics perform comprehensive vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance, and on-site repairs to keep our fleet in peak condition.
Mobile Division – Road Technician Controller Dora Jennings manages our mobile Road Technicians, who provide on-site maintenance and repairs in the field. No matter where the job takes us, this team travels far and wide to support local crews.
Our entire Fleet Management team works tirelessly to keep our equipment in top shape, ensuring our crews stay safe, efficient, and ready for any job. Their dedication keeps us moving forward—literally! Meet the team that keeps us on the road!
Kendall is a TCIA-Accredited Utility Contractor
Kendall is proud to announce that we have achieved the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) Accredited Utility Contractor designation! This recognition highlights our dedication to safety, quality, and ethical business practices.
“With TCIA accreditation, our customers and potential customers know that we have an impeccable safety program and that we meet top industry standards,” said Director of Corporate Safety Matt Irvin.
To earn accreditation, the company completed a rigorous audit and documentation process. Matt credits Safety Logistics Coordinator Kim Phillips for managing the extensive documentation and record submission, saying, “This achievement would not have been possible without her support.”
He also recognized Safety Manager Martin Reyes and Safety Supervisor Brady Jackson for working closely with the TCIA auditor during the field assessment. Industry professionals themselves, the auditors conducted thorough evaluations of Kendall crews in Tennessee and Georgia. Martin and Brady guided them through the process, showcasing our thorough safety practices.
Accreditation aligns us with the highest industry standards. A key requirement is that all safety and training staff must be Certified Treecare Safety Professionals. This means our safety managers and trainers undergo an advanced safety certification and obtain 30 continuing education units every three years.
This achievement reaffirms our dedication to safety and highlights the commitment of our safety, training, and field teams in maintaining a strong safety culture.
