Black History Month:
Honoring Trailblazers in Agriculture, Forestry, and Environmental Justice

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the valuable and lasting contributions of Black individuals and groups throughout our nation’s history. From pioneering innovations to advocating for civil rights, their legacies continue to inspire and will resonate for generations to come. Here are a few individuals and groups who have shaped our industry, particularly the fields of agriculture, conservation, and forestry:
-
George Washington Carver was a pioneering agricultural scientist and inventor. He promoted crop diversification, soil conservation, and sustainable farming practices. He is well-known for his groundbreaking research on peanuts, developing 300+ peanut-based products.
-
During World War II, the all-Black 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, the "Triple Nickles," played a critical role to protect forests in the Pacific Northwest. Training with the U.S. Forest Service to fight fires caused by Japanese balloon bombs, they answered 36 fire calls and made more than 1,200 jumps, pioneering modern smokejumping.
-
Chip Cartwright broke barriers as one of the first African-American foresters in the Forest Service. He then became the first African-American district ranger (1979), forest supervisor (1988), and regional forester (1994). Ellie Towns followed in 1998 as the first African-American woman regional forester.
-
Last February, the Forest Service launched an oral history project series called “African American Contributions to the Forest Service.” This podcast highlights the experiences of Black professionals within the Forest Service who “became leaders in civil rights, champions of equity and agents of change who paved the way for those who now stand on their shoulders.”

Conference Roundup
Xylem Kendall was proud to sponsor the Indiana Arborist Association’s Annual Conference and Tradeshow, the Midwestern Chapter ISA Annual Conference, and the South Carolina Vegetation Management Association (SCVMA) Annual Conference this past month. We appreciate the opportunity to support these associations and advance best practices in professional arboriculture and vegetation management throughout the industry.
Our own Region 1 Manager Jamie Johnson serves as the President of the SCVMA. While a rare snowstorm in Myrtle Beach deterred some travelers, the SCVMA conference was a great success! In addition to featuring two safety-focused presentations by Xylem’s Matt Irvin, Director of Corporate Safety and Perry Morris, Safety Specialist, Xylem COO Jack Guffey presented the SCVMA with a $2,500 check for its Scholarship Fund. This scholarship aids college students pursuing studies in forestry, horticulture, environmental science, and natural resources. We’re proud to support the next generation of environmental leaders.
“KnowBe4” IT Training
Computer and tablet users are required to participate in quarterly “know-how” IT training sessions. Designed to enhance your technical skills and empower you in your daily tasks, the trainings dive deep into essential IT topics relevant to our daily work and the ever-changing technological landscape. Participating in KnowBe4 trainings also helps foster a culture of awareness as we all practice proactive cybersecurity measures.
This quarter's training will focus on common threats and how to safeguard the organization, mitigating phishing scams, and the importance of reporting suspicious emails. You’ll need to complete training by March 10. Look for an email from “KnowBe4” with instructions.
